Docs: Preferences

Preferences

Open File → Preferences… (Ctrl+,; on a Mac, Ravenburst → Preferences… or ⌘+,). Changes apply straight away; click Done to close.

Appearance

  • Theme: Light, Dark, System (follow OS) or High Contrast (ADA). Also in View → Appearance, and the theme button in the status bar cycles through them.
  • Accessibility — UI Text Size: 100%, 115%, 130% or 150%. Scales the menus, panels and labels; for the writing itself, use the editor font size or zoom.

Editor

  • Editor Font: Georgia, Times New Roman, Garamond, Palatino Linotype, Courier New, Arial, Helvetica or your system's font.
  • Font Size: 10 to 20 pt.
  • Line Spacing: 1.0 (single), 1.15, 1.5 or 2.0 (double).
  • Autosave Interval: how long after you stop typing Ravenburst saves: 1, 3 (default), 5, 10 or 30 seconds. Compiling always saves first, whatever this is set to.

These set how text looks while you write. Exports use their own fonts and spacing (see Export Formats).

Spellcheck

  • Enable Spellcheck turns the red underlines on or off.
  • Custom Dictionary: type a word and click Add, or click × to remove one. Words you add from the right-click menu appear here too. The dictionary is shared by all your projects. To take it to another computer, use File → My Library & Dictionary → Export to a File….

Ravenburst never autocorrects or autocompletes, by design.

Academic

Fine-tune the APA 7th, MLA 9th and Chicago 17th exports. Choose a style, click Load, edit its settings and click Save. Reset to Default undoes your changes.

You can change the font, font size, line spacing, margins (in points: 72 points is one inch), header format, whether there's a title page, abstract and running head, the label of the reference list, footnotes or endnotes, and for Chicago, notes-bibliography or author-date citations. Changes apply to your next export.

Help → Check for Format Updates… looks for newer official APA and MLA settings from Ravenburst and offers to apply them. Applying an update replaces any changes you made here.

License

Shows whether Ravenburst is licensed or on a trial (with days left), the email the license belongs to and which versions it covers, with buttons to enter an activation code or see pricing. Help → License Status opens this tab. See License & Activation.

Updates

Shows your version, with a link to what's new in it. Check for updates automatically is on to start with: Ravenburst looks for a new version a few times a day. On Windows, and on Linux with the AppImage, it downloads the update in the background and Restart to update appears in the status bar; the update installs when you quit, and Ravenburst never restarts by itself. On a Mac, and on Linux with the .deb or .rpm package, Update available appears instead and takes you to the download page. Help → Check for Updates… checks straight away, whether or not this is switched on.

Settings that live elsewhere

  • Project settings (title, author, chapter labels, scene breaks, word target): in the Inspector with no document selected. See The Inspector.
  • Panels and layout: the View and Window menus. See Arranging the window.
  • Backups: Project → Git Backup….
