Troubleshooting

Answers to the things that most often go wrong. If yours isn't here, get in touch.

The trial bar says “Connect to the internet once to start your free trial”

Ravenburst hasn't been able to reach our server to start your trial. Check your connection, and that a firewall or proxy isn't blocking api.ravenburst.com, then close and reopen Ravenburst. You can keep writing meanwhile.

My activation code isn't accepted

  • Use the email address you bought with; the code only works with that one.
  • Paste the whole code, starting with RAVENBURST-. Spaces around it don't matter.
  • “Already activated on 3 devices”: deactivate the license on a computer you no longer use (Help → Deactivate License on This Device), or email us if you can't.
  • After three wrong attempts, wait five minutes before trying again.

“Project Not Found” when Ravenburst opens

The project you last had open has moved, been renamed, or is on a drive that isn't connected. Choose Browse for Project… to find it, New Project, or Skip. Nothing has been deleted.

Something is missing from my export

  • Is it ticked to compile? Check its checkbox in the Navigator, and the Include list in the Compile dialog.
  • A prologue or epilogue must be included in the final draft (its checkbox, or the Include in Final Draft button on the page).
  • Empty chapters and scenes are skipped.
  • Scripts, plays and children's books don't print footnotes, and images aren't included in EPUB yet. See Export Formats.
  • The wrong title page? Each export uses its own front matter folder. See Front and back matter.

The Compile dialog shows a lock

Your trial has ended, or hasn't started yet. See When the trial ends. Your writing is safe and still editable.

Git Backup says Git isn't installed, or can't sign in

  • Install Git from git-scm.com and reopen Ravenburst.
  • For an online copy, the repository must exist and be empty when you connect it, and your computer must be signed in. Installing Git Credential Manager sorts out most sign-in problems.
  • “Needs your attention” means the online copy and this computer have both changed. Restore the version you want from the list of backups. See Restoring.

A correct word is underlined

Right-click it and choose Add to Dictionary. Spelling is checked in US English; characters' and places' names are never underlined.

A panel has disappeared

Use View → Show / Hide, or Window → Reset Window Layout to put everything back.

I deleted something by mistake

  • Just now: Ctrl+Z.
  • A whole document: it's in Trash. Right-click → Restore.
  • An earlier version of a document: File → Browse Snapshots…
  • An earlier version of the whole project: restore from a backup.
